Will you be using your coat rack as they were originally intended to be used? Do you need a place to hang coats and jackets, or do you have a closet that you usually use for that purpose? If so, you can get a decorative coat rack that is as much for appearances as it is for practical uses. A rack won't take up a lot of room, but it won't look right placed against a wall, so it will need some room.

A coat rack may be crafted from various types of materials. Metal and wood are the most popular materials, with metal often being seen in contemporary styles of racks. Heavier metal is used more for ornate and traditional styles. A wood coat rack can be used with either traditional or contemporary styles, and they are quite versatile.

Some coat racks are larger, with more sets of hooks for hats and coats than the thinner racks with smaller bases. They may have a place to stash umbrellas at their base, as well. A coat rack is a great conversation piece, and you can use smaller racks to organize clothing in a child's bedroom. A coat rack is always practical, too, especially if you need a place for coats and jackets to dry out on rainy days, before they are hung in your closet.

If you like the idea of larger racks but don't have the space, you may opt to use a coat tree in your foyer or entry hall, instead. This is an even simpler piece of furniture, but it does serve its purpose, which is to keep wet or dirty coats out of the closet until they dry or are cleaned. Coat trees can also serve as everyday furnishings, since they will always look at home with your jackets on them.

A coat rack or tree works quite well in a mudroom, too. It will save you some housecleaning time by keeping messes confined to the mudroom, which is just a small place, and easier to clean than, say, the living room. Coat trees may also have separate compartments, where other items can be stored. A tree may have an umbrella stand on the bottom, although these are more commonly found with full-sized racks.

There are many various types of coat trees from which to select a favorite. Some are more traditional and ornate, and some are modern and show off a newer style. A glass and wood coat tree or sturdy coat racks are especially lovely, and they may be used for decoration, even if you don't usually hang coats on them.
