The media centers available today can fit basically any TV, but be sure you're getting the right size when you shop. In addition to fitting your TV, the media center should also fit well in the room, so measure the area before you make your final selection.

What type of other boxes do you need to place in the new wall unit, in addition to the TV? You probably have a DVR, a digital cable or satellite box, and most homes have DVD and Blu-Ray players, as well. If your children have a gaming console in the media room, take that into account when you're checking for needed space in an entertainment unit.

Most video cabinets have doors and drawers where you can store your Blu-Ray discs, DVD's and video game cartridges, and these should be closed off, so that they are not visible when you're not using them. You may also find units that have space for displaying your favorite collectibles, but they are not the main focus of the room.

If you are shopping for open wall units or entertainment centers, remember that you won't want to have your family's DVD's, Blu-Rays and video games all on display, so you might want to add a cabinet that will close them in. Glass cabinet doors are handy on most units, since you can use the remote when your doors are shut. Grills for speakers work well, too, so that the sound will travel properly.

Most newer entertainment units have systems for wires and cables that will keep them neatly organized behind the unit. This is handy for set-up, and for anytime you are swapping out old for new cable boxes or DVR's. These management systems for cables and cords will keep the cords in check and out of view, so you won't have a spaghetti bowl of cables sticking out from behind your unit.

Once you have determined the type of entertainment center you need for your room, you'll be better equipped to check out the various types of units, to decide which one will work the best for you. Giant wall units should not be used in smaller rooms, and once you know the size you need, you can concentrate on the style and finish that you prefer.

You'll find media units that can hold basically anything you might want to put in them, and you'll be able to choose from units that will match the style of furnishings you have in the rest of your home. Armoire type units, for example, will give your media room a classic look, and more modern units will give the room a contemporary flair. Selecting from the best of wall units and entertainment centers, you're sure to find the one that will work the best for you.
